The Bordeaux Cocoon

A Master Retreat in the Mountains

Verbier

Switzerland

Our clients — a cosmopolitan couple with a love for hospitality and travel — envisioned a dramatic yet soothing master bedroom in their mountain chalet. They asked for a space that would feel like a refined boutique hotel suite: dark, tactile, and atmospheric.
The room was to offer a break from the snowy exterior — a warm interior cocoon where one could rest, recharge, and reconnect. Above all, it had to feel like a personal haven: elegant, sensual, and thoughtfully layered.

Client Overview and Design Brief

Our clients — a cosmopolitan couple with a love for hospitality and travel — envisioned a dramatic yet soothing master bedroom in their mountain chalet. They asked for a space that would feel like a refined boutique hotel suite: dark, tactile, and atmospheric.
The room was to offer a break from the snowy exterior — a warm interior cocoon where one could rest, recharge, and reconnect. Above all, it had to feel like a personal haven: elegant, sensual, and thoughtfully layered.

Project Objectives

  • Design a moody and immersive master bedroom with hotel-suite inspiration

  • Use rich colour and materiality to evoke depth, warmth, and intimacy

  • Create a multifunctional layout with both sleeping and lounge zones

  • Maximize storage with minimal visual noise

  • Ensure timelessness in both palette and styling

Design Approach

  • We opted for a bold and enveloping color strategy: deep bordeauxfor walls and ceiling, creating an immersive and almost cinematic experience. This intense, warm tone anchors the space and sets the emotional tone.

  • The custom headboard, with vertical channeling in a pale greige velvet, contrasts the walls beautifully and adds softness. Each side of the bed features oak nightstands with marble tops, combining practicality with quiet luxury. Discreet wall sconces cast ambient pools of light, enhancing the mood without clutter.

  • Opposite the bed, bespoke dark oak joinery stretches wall to wall, integrating a TV, display niches, and concealed storage. This element adds masculine gravitas and architectural rhythm to the room.

  • We also carved out a lounge corner by the window: two sculptural burnt-orange boucle chairs and a marble pedestal table offer a spot for reading or sipping a nightcap, while layered curtains — sheer and blackout — offer full control over light and privacy.

Implementation Considerations

  • Bordeaux tone applied uniformly to all walls and ceiling for full immersion

  • Floor-to-ceiling joinery designed to provide generous storage while maintaining visual calm

  • Lighting layered for ambiance, task, and accent needs

  • Carpeting chosen for warmth, tactility, and acoustic comfort

  • All furnishings customized or curated to blend comfort, character, and durability

Outcome

The final space is a sanctuary of quiet drama — elegant, intimate, and personal. It invites its owners to slow down, embrace the softness of the moment, and feel both grounded and indulged.
This is not just a bedroom — it’s a mood, a mindset, a private world within the home. Designed for lingering, not just sleeping.
