Reimagining the Attic as a Lifestyle Space

Play, Relaxation, and Emotional Value Under the Eaves

Lausanne

Switzerland

For this 200+ sqm luxury apartment project, the attic presented a unique opportunity to create flexible and joyful spaces that could resonate with future buyers. The brief was to conceptualize two distinctive design directions for the attic: a dedicated children’s play area and a chill-out relaxation zone for adults or teenagers, maximizing the charm of the sloped ceiling architecture.

Project Objectives
Showcase the attic as a fully usable and valuable square meter.
Appeal to a broader buyer profile by offering two lifestyle scenarios.
Incorporate functionality, charm, and design cohesion with the rest of the property.

Design Approach

Children’s Play Area

Warm wood textures and soft color tones set the foundation for a friendly, engaging play environment.

A playful round table with Scandinavian-inspired bunny chairs encourages craft, play, or snack moments.

Smart toy storage in modular bins ensures tidiness while injecting cheerful color.

An accent rug visually anchors the space, providing a soft surface for seated play.

Chill Room

On the other scenario, a cozy nook was created using plush plaid cushions and a relaxed built-in bench concept under the sloped window.

A rattan pendant light adds softness and a natural element, reinforcing the “quiet luxury” mood.

Views of the surrounding trees and rooftops were emphasized through the strategic placement of a custom-cut roof window, adding architectural interest and natural light.

A low side table introduces functionality without interrupting the relaxed ambiance.

Implementation Considerations

Lighting was layered for both play and relaxation zones, with consideration for potential daylight limitations.

Furniture selections prioritized rounded corners, durable finishes.

Both setups were visualized in 3D to demonstrate the spatial quality despite ceiling slopes.

Outcome

The attic is no longer a “forgotten” upper floor. Instead, it has been transformed into a desirable feature of the apartment—flexible, inviting, and full of character. Whether imagined as a joyful haven for young children or a peaceful cocoon for reading and lounging, the space adds lifestyle value that buyers can emotionally connect to. The design aligns with House of Moods’ ethos of “Joyful Living”, cleverly framed in a tucked-away sanctuary.
